Small Town: John Mellencamp 1985

Cloverdale.  It’s a cool small town according to  74,390 people who voted in agreement responding to a poll by Budget Travel magazine.  Alas, our northernmost Sonoma County community lost out to Ely, Minnesota as the coolest small town in America.

Since I’m sort of a weather geek anyway, here’s a short skinny on Cloverdale and Ely’s climates. Source: weather.com

Ely is right on the Canadian border in St. Louis County, Minnesota. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a popular destination among outdoor enthusiasts.

Cold record:

  • Cloverdale: 17 degrees, December of 1990
  • Ely: -45degrees February 1967

I guess you could say it’s a COOL small town in the winter.

Average Rainfall:

  • Cloverdale: 42.06 in.
  • Ely: 27.94 in

Okay, so Cloverdale gets a lot more rain, but Ely gets 68.9 inches of snow on average, according to weather records that Ellen Cashman and her confident coworkers at the Ely Chamber of Commerce pulled up for me on Wednesday. Cashman say’s that it’s a “Warm, beautiful, bright blue sunny day” in Ely. I tried to find snow records for Cloverdale, but there weren’t any.  I would trust that Cloverdale gets a few inches a year.
