The July crud lifted this morning. The tractors are smoothing over the race track here at the fairgrounds. The national anthem played by trumpeteer Pete Estabrook echoed through the grandstands, sending a flight of swallows searching for a quiter place.

Lots of men in cowboy hats. The grandstand ushers are wearing lime green shirts; easier for them to spot, even via satellite. Now the horses area walking in front of the grandstand.

The announcer rattles off the names of a the horses and mounts.

How the heck does he remember this stuff?

It’s post time at the fair.
